| 内容記述 | Since antiquity, monograms—symbols formed by combining several letters—have appeared on coins and other items in Europe. Their use persisted through the Roman Empire and became widespread in Western Europe and the Byzantine world during the Middle Ages. Monograms were adopted by the monarchs and clergy as political symbols of authority. They also served invocative purposes, incorporating the name of God and prayer texts. In illuminated manuscripts, decorated letters evolved into intricately designed monograms, particularly during the Carolingian and Ottonian periods. This study provides an overview of monogram culture in Europe from Late Antiquity to the Early Middle Ages and explores their role in the use of illuminated manuscripts. |
